Not Your Ordinary School

Two of my kids attend NYOS, a local charter school. The day before yesterday my Nattie stayed home from school because he had the flu. It might have saved his life.

On that day after an assembly a boy in Nattie's class was missing. So they looked for him and the gym teacher found him in the rest room under cardiac arrest. He administered CPR and called 911 and the boy is now in critical condition in the hospital.

The school had a meeting yesterday, but siting privacy concerns of the family, would not go into details about the accident. So I have no way of knowing if this was an illness, an assault, an accident or a suicide attempt.

It seems to me safety always must come first, and this case the safety of all of our children must come before the families wish for privacy. We simply need to know the details to know if it is safe to return our kids to that school.

I was quite disturbed to learn on the evening news last night that the poor boy was found hanging on a hook in the bathroom. Seems to me that is exactly the type of information we need to know.

Since the school appears to be covering up the facts of the case, and since we do not know what happened, or if it is safe, my kids will not be returning to NYOS.

You might want to add the boy and his family to your prayer list.

Update: The poor boy died today, 48 hours after they found him.

Ok, that is really freaky. Keep us posted as to what you learn. So do you have to transfer the kids into public school now?

If he was hanging on a hook, was he put there? Or, did he hang himself?

I just don't understand the reluctance of the school to disclose information, especially if it means putting the children at risk. I think it would be a wise decision to transfer your children.

Oh my goodness. This story has gripped us all at work and we spent a long time discussing this morning. I'm thankful it was not one of your children but I do feel so much for those parents. How are is Nattie taking it? Do you know if the child had siblings? I will add your kids to my prayers, too; I'm sure it is so confusing to them.

We are currently looking for schools for D so this is such a scary thing.

Sounds rather a silly system to me.
Our school keeps the identity of anyone involved private in tricky circumstances, but ALWAYS keeps the parents informed of the exact situation of what happened and what the school intends to do about it to prevent the circumstances from happening again.

We could register them in public school, or find another charter school, or private school, but likely we will home school for now.

Callie, it is a mystery how he got on the hook.

Nattie has not been back to school since before this happened, so so far it has not affected hom too much.

Oh the poor boy ... and his folks.
I hope it wasn't some other kid playing at being a silly bully who propped him up there thinking it was a joke. Are there older kids at the same school?
Too sad.

I talked with one of the teachers from the school. She said it is the police who are not wanting anyone to talk until they finish their investigation. Hopefully, there will be some resolution to this sad event for everyone involved. Certainly it will comfort the friends and family to know exactly what happened (if that can be determined).

My prayers not only for you and your family, but even more so for the family of this poor child.
