Swingtown: A Guilty Pleasure

Swingtown, a CBS show about, uh...swingers is actually a really good show, and not the first broadcast porn as you might expect. The character development and the writing are very good.

Last nights' episode about living an authentic life, compared to succumbing to the expectations of society was right on target in my opinion. Happiness seems to lie somewhere in between. You have to conform to some extent to connect to society, but not so much that you lose yourself.

The thing that is tricky and leads to many misunderstandings is that that level of conformance is different for everyone. Some people feel a strong need to conform and fit in and for others it is of little or no importance.

The next tricky thing is that even within a couple it is not the same, and so the two partners needs to work out how much they want to conform, or how much that conformity will stifle individuality.

Very interesting questions from a very interesting TV show.

Yeah, see - I won't let my husband watch that show. It'll give him too many ideas . . .

:-D

Sounds rather confusing!

Do we conform only to connect with society? Maybe we conform anyway, whether we want to or not. Maybe out "non-conforming" is in reality the most loyal conforming possible, since our actions result from those very foundations we would shun.
This show is not on any networks over here. So I guess this is a non-conformist society over here.....
