The fire situation in San Diego is still out of control. Qualcomm stadium, where the Chargers play, has been converted to a refugee site.
San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Cartelli described scenes of "utter devastation" with hundreds of homes lost and "many hundreds" damaged.
"It's probably the worst significant event in my career of 36 years," Cartelli said.
"It will not end ... until it reaches the ocean or the winds turn around."
My sister Tracy is the closest to the flames. I got this e-mail from my sister Taffy:
"I'm calling her this morning. I spoke with her last night and she was telling me she saw flames, (big ones), in back of the Target shopping center (By the Edwards theater for those that know the area), coming down the hill. She didn't want to leave yet, but I think she needs to this morning. I checked out San Diego's Emergency site this am, and looks like she on the map for the probably mandatory evacuation area. I'm going to be telling her to get ready to go and get going."
It can be hard to get through. The circuits are busy.
Update from my mom:
"Just spoke with Tracy and "we" rode to Campo Rd. to check on these fires and she didn't think they looked as bad as they had at 3 am but 94 is still closed and several firetrucks came by. They were from Santa Barbara!! She is going to try to get a couple hours sleep and check on things later. Said she'd probably try to get to Taf's if mandatorily evacuated. Keep in touch, everybody."
Update 2
Here is a map of the situation.
Update 3 from Dad's wife Fran
"yeah, we told her she could come here with the boys and Mo (our favorite guinea pig) on Monday. We don't want any of y'all to think we are not concerned about her---evacuation areas are very specific--this morning some areas are off the evac list and people are going home--mostly in the coastal areas like Del Mar. Alot of people have been unable to get to work because of all the road closures so the whole city is in freeze frame--no traffic, less food at the grocery stores (trucks can't deliver), hit and miss mail delivery etc. Very strange time. My Mom has been with us since Sunday--my brother-in-law stayed with her home in a mandatory evac area after arguing
with the cops (yes, he's nuts) and we've been in touch with him by phone. She has a doctor's appt today in Poway--but Poway is all evacuated and shut down--many homes there lost. Love, Fran"
